Link Building Tips:
- Make it look organic. Ideally Google prefers sites that are so content-rich and relevant to a keyword that other sites will voluntarily link to you. If you can secure one-way inbound links from others, make sure they don’t all use the same anchor text; mix it up a bit but always remember to include all or part of your targeted key phrase.
- All links count, but some more than others. Some SEO experts now suspect that links from high PR pages carry less weight than before. Sure, links from PR6 and 7 sites are going to help raise your PR but they won’t guarantee results. Your website needs to be supported by a wide variety of links.
- The less links there are on the source page that is linking to you, the better. But more important is the relevance of the content on the page to your targeted keyword. Links from a page saturated with a matching keyword are like gold nuggets.
- Don’t rush! We never add more than 50 links a week for our clients. Google will surely ‘smell a rat’ if your link count is dramatically increased. Luckily not all the directories validate your links at once, so by pacing out your link building activities it can appear like a natural progression resulting from general site promotion.
- It’s dangerous to add your site to any old directory that is free to add. Although there is no evidence to show that links are penalised if they are from non-relevant sites, Google almost certainly has an eye on all of these directories or sites offering automated reciprocal links. Link “networks” in particular can be detrimental partners in your linking.
- Above all, be patient. The big wheels turn slowly in SEO. Sometimes it takes weeks for a link to appear and then be spidered by a search engine. If your site is new, it is likely to be sandboxed (placed on probation) for several months before the links will have any effect on your ranking results. And if you have a new page, it may not acquire any PageRank from Google for up to three months, making it difficult for you to find reciprocal link partners. Therefore, forward planning is necessary.
